How To Clean Your Oven

Clean

Assuming you don’t have a self-cleaning oven (and even if you do), you’ll have to give your oven a good cleaning at some point. The frequency depends on how often you use it, but a good rule of thumb is to give it a once-over every three months.

Here’s how to clean your oven, both inside and out. The first step is to remove everything from the oven, including the racks. You can wash most oven racks in the sink with hot, soapy water, but check your owner’s manual first to be sure.

Once the racks are out, give the oven interior a quick wipe-down with a damp sponge or cloth. If there’s any stubborn grime, mix a paste of baking soda and water and apply it with a sponge. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then wipe it away.

Next, move on to the outside of the oven. Start by wiping down the control panel with a damp cloth; if there’s any built-up grease or grime, use a mild soap or all-purpose cleaner. The control panel isn’t the only thing that needs attention; over time, splatters and spills can make their way onto the oven door glass. To clean it, mix up a solution of equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and mist it onto the glass. Wipe it away with a damp sponge or cloth; if there’s any tough build-up, use a nylon scrubber.

When you finish cleaning the glass, take some time to polish the stainless steel surface of the oven door with polish or window cleaner until it shines like new again. With the exterior clean and sparkling, put everything back in its place and enjoy your like-new oven.
